Claudia Sheinbaum Clarifies National Social Program Plans

President Claudia Sheinbaum clarified on Friday, January 24, that the Men's Welfare Pension Program in Mexico City will not be implemented at the national level. The pension, an initiative of the head of government, Clara Brugada, aims to provide financial support to men aged 60 to 64 years. Although Sheinbaum highlighted that social programs are primarily intended for women, she pointed out that each state has the freedom to extend them to men if they so decide.

"The program, and I defend it this way, is for women; the states can give the part that corresponds to men," Sheinbaum expressed during her daily conference from the National Palace. In Mexico City, Clara Brugada has chosen to universalize the pension, despite it being focused on women at the national level.

Brugada announced last August her intention to expand the Welfare Pension to also include men aged 60 to 64 years. The extension of the program is expected to come into effect this year, coinciding with the distribution of resources to the female beneficiaries. Sheinbaum's decision to launch a pension exclusive to women is based on the recognition of the unpaid work many housewives do.

Sheinbaum mentioned that support for Women's Welfare aged 60 to 64 recognizes the effort of women who undertake multiple tasks without receiving financial compensation. Additionally, she highlighted that this support allows them to have independent financial backing instead of depending solely on their partners. Meanwhile, in Tabasco, Governor Javier May Rodríguez is also promoting the extension of the pension to men.

In summary, the Men's Welfare Pension in Mexico City will not apply at the national level, as social programs focused on women, like the pension, depend on the decisions of each state. Meanwhile, in Mexico City and Tabasco, measures are being implemented to expand the coverage of this pension to both female and male beneficiaries.
